Kids and Families Will Enjoy Rocks, Minerals, Fossils and Pumpkins at Illinois State Museum October Programs

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Museum in Springfield will host upcoming special events for children and families that feature fossils, minerals, rocks – and pumpkins.

Rock, Mineral, or Fossil?

Saturday, October 6, 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

How can you tell the difference between a rock, mineral, or fossil? Come to the Illinois State Museum and find out during the “Super Saturday” special event “Rock, Mineral or Fossil?” on Sat., Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Families can make their own fossil, create a watercolor geode, discover fossils, rocks and minerals found in Illinois, and take home their very own rock or mineral.

Super Saturdays offer thematic activities recommended for children ages 5 and up each month. Activities take 30-40 minutes to complete and are included with Museum admission. Pumpkins Story Time

Tuesday, October 9, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Whether for pies or jack-o-lanterns, most pumpkins are grown right here in Illinois. Learn more about these big, orange fruits with stories and a craft at the Illinois State Museum’s October Story Time for children on Tues., Oct. 9 at 10:00 a.m. Story Time is designed for preschool children ages 3-5 and their caregivers.  They’re held on the second Tuesday of each month, with stories, picture books, a craft, and objects from the Museum’s collections.
