Pumpkins, Spinning and Weaving Highlight a Busy Saturday at the Illinois State Museum

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Get an early jump on Halloween at the Pumpkinpalooza Super Saturday event this Sat., Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield.
Ninety-five percent of pumpkins processed in the United States are grown in Illinois. Pumpkinpalooza visitors will be able to learn more about this important crop with educational displays, games, pumpkin seed tasting, and crafts including making a decoupage jack-o-lantern candle holder.
Super Saturdays offer free, thematic activities recommended for children ages 5 and up each month. Activities take 30-40 minutes to complete and feature crafts and educational games. Parents and families are encouraged to participate. Super Saturdays are sponsored by Bank of Springfield.
In addition to the Pumpkinpalooza fun, in recognition of National Spinning and Weaving week, members of the Prairie Weavers Guild will demonstrate various methods of spinning and weaving at the Illinois State Museum on Oct. 7. Guild members will be spinning wool, with examples of various kinds of yarn, and cotton from seed to thread. Visitors will be able to observe loom weaving on table, rigid heddle, inkle and potholder looms.

The Illinois State Museum is located at 502 South Spring St. in Springfield. The Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon – 4:30 p.m.
