“North in the Night: The Underground Railroad” at the Illinois State Museum

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Museum invites children and their families to learn about the Underground Railroad on Saturday, February 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. during the “North in the Night: The Underground Railroad” Super Saturday event.
Participants will learn about perils that faced runaway slaves as they try to find their way through a life-size maze by flashlight. Children will hear the story of Henry “Box” Brown, who escaped to freedom by shipping himself to Philadelphia, and can climb inside a shipping crate of similar dimensions to imagine what his journey must have been like. Visitors will also enjoy making crafts and seeing artifacts provided by the Underground Railroad Committee of Morgan County.
Super Saturday events at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield offer free, thematic activities recommended for children ages 5 and up on the first Saturday of each month. Activities take 30-40 minutes to complete and feature crafts and educational games. Parents and families are encouraged to participate. Activities are free with Museum admission ($5 admission for adults ages 19-64; free admission for children, seniors, and veterans). The Illinois State Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon until 4:30 p.m. The Museum is located at 502 South Spring Street in Springfield.
