Free Family Astronomy Event at Dickson Mounds August 11 and 12

LEWISTOWN, IL – The Illinois State Museum-Dickson Mounds is hosting a free family event on August 11 beginning at 10:00 p.m., through the night until August 12 at 5:00 a.m.  View the Perseid Meteor Shower from the Museum’s observation deck and enjoy hands-on crafts throughout the late night into the pre-dawn hours of August 12. This is a rare opportunity for visitors to see the Museum come alive at night.  In addition, Jesse Hoover, an acting member of the Peoria Astronomical Society, will be presenting on meteor showers, meteorites, and other objects. The PAS is a non-profit organization of amateur astronomers from Peoria and surrounding communities.  Information about their group and programs can be found on their website at www.astronomical.org.

Registration is not required.  Admission is free; donations are greatly appreciated.  Light refreshments will be served.

The Illinois State Museum-Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.
