Tales from the Vault: The Discovery of Judd the Wooly Mammoth

Wolly Mammoth tusk at ISM In September 2005, Lincoln College freshman Judd McCullum made quite a discovery while doing a field study at Sugar Creek near Lincoln, Illinois. He reached down into the water for a freshwater mussel and pulled out portions of a 12-foot-long tusk of a mammoth. Join Dennis Campbell, Director of Lincoln College’s Campbell Creekside Outdoor Center for Environmental Education, as he shares the amazing story of the discovery of Judd the Wooly Mammoth. Get an up-close look at the mammoth’s tusks and teeth currently being held at the ISM Research Collection Center and hear of other Pleistocene “large game” being found in the streams and gravel pits of Logan County, Illinois.

Dennis Campbell, PhD is a retired professor of Life and Earth Sciences of Lincoln College and currently continues as the Director of Lincoln College’s Campbell Creekside Outdoor Center for Environmental Education as one of the few remaining employees of the recently closed college. Various jobs before Lincoln College included science editor for the Australian Museum, educational director/columnist for The Dallas Morning News, founder/editor/publisher of Texas Natural History and Environmental Connections magazines, and managing editor/adjunct curator of zoology and landscape ecology of the Illinois State Museum.

This program will take place in-person at the ISM Research and Collection Center at 1011 E. Ash Street, Springfield.
