Fair Employment? American Indian Labor at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago

American Indians and other Indigenous peoples were employed in a broad variety of ways leading up to and during the 1893 world’s fair. Dr. Beck will discuss his groundbreaking research on the subject with a focus on the types of work that Indigenous people did as well as the ways in which they were, or were not, compensated, and what this meant in turn of the century America. David Beck is a professor in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign history department. David is not Indigenous, but he has worked for more than 30 years with Tribal communities addressing federal policies and Tribal sovereignty. He teaches courses on federal Indian policy, Tribal sovereignty, and urban American Indians. He is an award-winning author of several books, including histories of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, the Chicago American Indian community, and the 1893 Chicago world’s fair. His latest book, Bribed with our own money: Federal Abuse of Tribal Funds in the Termination Era, will be published in May.
