Interrupted Journey | A Photographic Journal of Bird Rescue and Relationship

This exhibition of photographs and journal entries by Nora Moore Lloyd (Ojibwe/Anishinaabe) provides a look into one artist’s ongoing work with bird rescue and release in the Chicago area. These photographs honor those birds whose lives have been interrupted by human activity. ‘A beauty shaped by absence,’ Lloyd says. Lloyd’s work is rooted in her Indigenous perspective of mutual respect and relationship to the land and nature.
“As a photographer, seeing an eagle, hawk, or falcon in flight and trying to capture on film their magnificence was always an exciting challenge … surpassed only by holding close a rescued hawk/falcon/owl during rescue and [transferring] them to a carrier—twenty seconds of intimacy that is indescribable," says Nora Moore Lloyd
Lloyd’s photos highlight the many dangers – both natural and manmade – that birds face during migration season. As climates change and cities grow, migrating birds face new challenges on their travels. This exhibition asks the questions: How are birds adapting to these changes? And what can we do to make sure their journey goes uninterrupted?
In addition to Lloyd’s photographs, additional contributions from the ISM’s Zoology curators and the Director of Chicago Bird Collision Monitors hope to raise awareness about the human impact on bird populations in our state. “The images startle us out of statistics and facts into the real-life danger faced by birds in our state. Lloyd’s photographs are filled with compassion, love and sadness for the journeys that are interrupted,” says Curator of Art Doug Stapleton.
Interrupted Journeys was organized by Nora Moore Lloyd; Doug Stapleton, Curator of Art; Dr. Meredith Mahoney, Curator of Zoology; and Alex Ruger, Curator of Science Education with contributions from H. David Bohlen, Curator of Ornithology and Annette Prince, Director, Chicago Bird Collision Monitors
