Join ISM History Curator Erika Holst as she examines the experience of longtime domestic servants in 19th century Springfield, Illinois. Explore this history through the lens of Nancy Dobbins of Springfield, who lived with the Enos family for more than 50 years. Who were these women who served in families for extended periods of time? What led or compelled them to stay? What was their status within the households? What was their lived experience like? What can the historical record tell us about Nancy Dobbins and women like her? More importantly, where is the historical record silent?
